What can a brand mention tell you?
A brand mention is a reference to your business, product or expert in another piece of content. It may include a link, but an industry article, customer recommendation or forum discussion can also help a buyer discover your company.
A mention is not proof of improved AI visibility. The number of mentions alone cannot predict how often ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity will recommend a business. Their answers vary, and there is no shared public formula assigning a weight to every mention.
A more useful starting question is: where does the right buyer encounter helpful, accurate information about us before making contact?
Links and mentions do not replace each other
A link gives the reader a direct route to a source. An unlinked mention can introduce a business or generate interest, but the reader must find more information independently.
It is not justified to say that links used to be the only search visibility factor or that unlinked mentions have now replaced them. Nor can sources be assigned universal AI weights. A detailed customer example in a small trade publication may be more useful to a buyer than a passing name-check in a large newspaper.
Google says standard SEO foundations also apply to its AI search features. Visibility should therefore not depend solely on collecting mentions. Google’s guidance on AI features and websites.
Assess a mention from the buyer’s perspective
When your company is discussed elsewhere, check four things:
- Audience: does the publication reach potential customers?
- Substance: does it explain real expertise or merely name the company?
- Accuracy: are the service, business details and context correct?
- Next step: can an interested reader find more information and contact you?
You can assess these without guessing at an AI service’s internal scoring. A mention can help a customer directly even when its effect on AI visibility cannot be demonstrated.
How should you build mentions?
Start with work worth discussing. An approved customer example, a well-supported expert comment or a useful answer in an industry discussion can make expertise visible.
An accounting expert might explain in a trade publication what a business should check before changing accountant. The value comes from useful information and a relevant audience, rather than repeating the company name. This is an illustrative example, not a Revla client result.
Do not buy fabricated recommendations or fill discussions with adverts. Get permission before publishing an identifiable customer example. Ensure your own website contains an up-to-date description of the same service.
How should you monitor results?
Record the source, date, topic and any link. Review the context yourself: automatic sentiment classification alone does not establish whether the information is useful or accurate.
Track identifiable referral traffic and resulting enquiries. Ask new customers how they heard about you. Branded searches and direct traffic can provide context, but changes in either do not prove the effect of a single mention.
If you test AI answers, repeat the same questions at different times and record the service used. One recommendation does not prove a strategy worked, and absence from one answer does not necessarily identify a website problem.
When should mentions not be the first priority?
If your service page is unclear or business information is inconsistent, fix that first. Otherwise, a reader who follows up on a mention cannot reliably establish what you offer.
With limited resources, choose one topic relevant to your buyers and a suitable publication. There is no universal monthly mention target or guaranteed deadline for inclusion in AI recommendations.
Address negative feedback by investigating and resolving the problem. Collecting positive mentions is not a substitute for correcting a mistake. Move personal information and confidential customer matters into a private conversation.
Where should you start?
Check what is already published about your business and whether your own pages reflect the same reality. Then choose one useful topic to explain to the right audience. Measure suitable enquiries as well as attention.
