Choose the emphasis according to the problem

Google Ads or SEO? Start by deciding whether you need to test existing demand, improve results from pages already appearing in search, or build visibility for searches where your business is missing. The problem should determine the channel.

With limited resources, starting both at once may spread the work too thin. Equally, effective advertising should not be stopped just because organic traffic starts arriving. What matters is which activity produces profitable customers.

How do the costs differ?

In Google Ads, media spend and the work of managing advertising are separate costs. CPC varies with the query, competition and campaign, among other factors. It does not rise uniformly across industries or automatically every year.

SEO costs can include technical improvements, content and monitoring. Google does not charge for an organic click, but that does not make the traffic free. Maintaining content and improving the site still require work.

SEO does not automatically become more profitable than advertising after a fixed number of months. Compare the total costs, customers acquired and contribution those customers generate.

When can Google Ads be a useful first priority?

Consider advertising when customers already search for your service and you want to test whether a query, offer or landing page produces commercially useful enquiries.

A local maintenance business might test advertising in a limited service area. It could learn which services attract demand and what jobs result from the enquiries. Launching a campaign does not guarantee sales in the first week.

Seasonal businesses can align advertising with demand. Organic visibility can also be valuable during a season, but work on that visibility should begin before the busiest sales period.

Advertising is not mandatory for every new business. If demand is unknown, margins are unclear or enquiries are not handled effectively, resolve those questions before increasing spend.

When can SEO be a useful first priority?

Prioritise SEO when buyers search for your services and the website has a realistic opportunity to answer those searches better.

If a service page already receives impressions for important queries but performs weakly, fixing its content and technical problems may be a better first step than opening a new channel. In a large online store, category structure and product selection questions may be the priority.

SEO takes time and maintenance, but a universal results timeline is not a useful investment basis. Establish the site’s actual weaknesses, the competitive situation and which changes can realistically be implemented.

When should you avoid scaling either channel yet?

If enquiries arrive but do not become sales, more traffic may also create more wasted work. Check whether the enquiries come from suitable buyers, the page reflects the actual offering and sales follows up effectively.

If a service page does not explain the service, its audience or the next step, improve it before increasing traffic spend. Measurement should distinguish a submitted form from a completed sale.

Even if nobody searches for a product’s name, people may search for the problem it solves. Investigate that before concluding that search marketing has no demand to capture.

Calculate profitability from contribution, not revenue

The following is a hypothetical calculation, not a Revla service price or a promise of advertising results.

Suppose an order leaves €20 after variable costs and each click costs €2. If one in ten clicks produces an order, media cost per order is €20. All of the contribution is then spent on ad clicks, leaving nothing for management work or fixed business costs.

A simplified media-cost threshold is:

Media cost per order = CPC / purchase conversion rate
Conversion rate covering media cost = CPC / contribution per order

Here, 2 / 20 = 10%. That only covers media cost; it is not a target for overall profitability. If €20 were the selling price rather than contribution, the calculation would need the actual contribution instead.

For a service business, include the proportion of enquiries that become sales. A cheap lead can produce an expensive customer if few enquiries turn into suitable jobs. Include later customer value when you have evidence for it.

Adjust the emphasis using results

Advertising data can inform SEO: which search terms bring suitable customers, and which questions should the landing page answer? SEO can also reveal demand worth testing through advertising.

Do not automatically reduce advertising when an organic ranking improves. Test a limited change and monitor total sales, customer acquisition costs and enquiry quality. An ad and an organic result for the same search do not necessarily replace each other one for one.

AI answers can also affect the search experience. They do not determine the right channel mix on their own. Base the choice on your buyers’ searches and actual results.

Four questions before deciding

  1. Are customers already searching for the service or problem you address?
  2. What contribution does a suitable new customer generate, and what can acquisition cost?
  3. Can you connect enquiries to sales reliably enough?
  4. Is the current bottleneck visibility, website content or sales follow-up?
